IP address

Finding the IP address?

An IP address is a unique address that identifies a device on the Internet or a local network. IP stands for Internet Protocol. It is a set of rules governing the format of data transmitted over the Internet or a local area network. An IP address is an identifier used to transfer information between devices on a network. It contains location information and allows the device to be used for communication. The Internet needs to be able to distinguish between different computers, routers, and websites. IP addresses provide one way to do this and are integral to how the Internet works.

What is an IP?

An IP address is a set of numbers separated by dots. The IP address is indicated by 4 digits. An example of an address would be 192.158.1.38. Each number in the set ranges from 0 to 255. Thus, the total IP address range can range from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255.

IP addresses are not random. They are mathematically created and distributed by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), the Internet Corporation's division of names and numbers. ICANN is a not-for-profit organization founded in the United States in 1998 to help keep the Internet safe and accessible for everyone. Every time someone registers a domain on the Internet, they go through a domain name registrar and pay a small fee to register the domain with ICANN.

What is a Private IP address?

A private IP address is the address of a device connected to your home or work network. If you have multiple devices connected to your Internet Service Provider (ISP), each device will have a unique private IP address. Devices outside of your home or work network cannot access this IP address.

Example: 192.168.1.1

Private IP is not unique because there are only a limited number of devices on the network.

You can use various methods to find the private IP address of your device. If you are a Windows user, you just need to go to the command prompt and enter the ipconfig command. If you are a Mac user, you need to enter the following ifconfig command in your terminal application.

If your phone is connected to the Internet, you can find out the IP address by opening Wi-Fi settings. IOS users can find the IP address by clicking the "i" button next to the network they are connected to. Android users click the network name in WiFi settings and the IP address is displayed.

A public IP address is the primary IP address connected to your home or business network. This IP address connects you to the world and is unique to all users. To find your public IP address, go to the SupportAlly website in your browser and you will see your public IP address and other browser information.
